WHY LASER LIGHT SOURCE PROJECTORS ARE THE BEST

Laser light source projectors are much better than older lamp based projectors as they offer brighter, more vibrant, and clearer images which are easier to view even in ambient light.

They have a longer lifespan and can last up to 20,000 hours, unlike traditional lamp-based projectors which can last up to 3,000 hours.

Moreover, laser light source projectors consume less energy and require less maintenance, making them a cost-effective solution for all of our projects.

Laser light source projectors are better for long term installations than older projector lamp types due to their longer lifespan, resulting in less frequent replacements and maintenance costs.

For instance, running a show for 5 hours a day will yield a lamp life that last for more than 10 years!

They also have a more consistent and stable brightness throughout their lifespan compared to lamp-based models, ensuring consistent image quality.

Furthermore, laser projectors have a wider color gamut and greater color accuracy, providing a more immersive viewing experience.

At NOVA Light Labs, we firmly believe that laser-based projectors are the best option for all of our clients.

Their exceptional brightness, clarity, and durability make them the top choice for any lighting project.

EXPERIMENTS WITH "HOLOGRAM" SCREENS AND PROJECTION MAPPING

Experimentation leads to new ideas and that is something that is done often here at NOVA Light Labs.

In this case it was time to try out the new "hologram" style screen with some proper projection mapping and lighting.

There are clearly some points to improve on but the core of the effect was absolutely amazing. With the right lighting and projector angles the screen virtually disappears leaving the visuals floating in air.

Live events, concerts, art galleries, and even interactive pieces could all be extended using products like this.

PROJECTION MAPPING HOLOGRAPHIC VISUALS FOR BUMBERSHOOT ONTO WATER FOUNTAIN

Many surfaces, architecture, and objects can be activated with the magic of projection mapping - including massive water fountains!

It was just this type of feature that the organizers of the Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival were looking to highlight. This feature, centered in the middle of the Seattle Center, is the International Fountain spanning over 100’ wide and 50’ tall.

To properly bring this attraction into the mix for the main event NOVA Light Labs was hired to design and operate a projection mapping system for the fountain.

The fountain itself is arranged in a row, very similar the mohawk haircut, such that by placing a projector on either side we can merge the images in the middle of the fountain.

This results in a holographic like effect that is absolutely magical, viewable from 360º, and visible from across the entire site.

For the content we employed professional broadcast techniques to route live video feeds from the Fisher Stage and Stadium Stage onto the feature so that the ADA sections and auxiliary beer gardens had a prime view of the show even though 100’s of feet away.

Every night the fountain became a huge attraction and meeting place for it was highly visible from afar and showcased all of the action happening around the venue.

Overall water fountains as a surface for projection mapping are an entirely viable medium and we look forward to exploring the studio space more!

3D PROJECTION MAPPING ON LEAFY GREEN TREES FOR BUMBERSHOOT MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival was looking for a creative way to activate a large row of trees next to the Fisher Main Stage of the Seattle Center.

After much brainstorming, and considering many forms of lighting, projection mapping was chosen as a means to bring them into the show.

Any surface that can absorb and reflect light is a possible canvas for projections. It turns out leafy green trees are in that set too!

A whole new light was cast on an otherwise blank slate with visual content of simulated birds flocking from tree to tree during intermissions.

As this was right next to the main stage why not integrate a live video feed from the camera crew so that patrons in the beer garden could still have a prime view? Done.

It was a blast watching artists from Billy Joel to Third Eye Blind join in on the arboreal display over the weekend.

Overall it was a sight to see and blew our minds at how trees as a projection surface were entirely viable.

BELLINGHAM ACID BALL EARTH DAY PROJECTIONS

The Waypoint Park in Bellingham, WA is an amazing new foray into opening up the waterfront in the heart of the city. What a scenic location for some projections, yes?

Along this historic shoreline where the old meets the new is an ancient spherical vessel from the industrial past that is now on display.

This is the Acid Ball.

For Earth Day, April 22nd of 2021, NOVA Light Labs teamed up with Nick Hartrich and Sienna Dawn for a spontaneous nod to the 3rd rock from the sun.

The location had plenty of space, a great view, with the Acid Ball as prime subject for 3D projection mapping.

The content was a clear choice: animated NASA satellite imagery set to downtempo electronic music.

In proper Bellingham style many denizens drifted in and saw the show as the Sun transited the horizon directly behind.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see this on a more permanent basis?
Perhaps featuring live weather or information about the cosmos?

12TH AVE ARTS CENTER ARCHITECTURAL PROJECTIONS

The 12th Avenue Arts Center is a forward thinking building in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood sporting an apartment complex with well furnished art studios throughout the first two floors.

The exterior also happened to be perfect for architectural projection mapping.

To ring in the grand opening of 12th Ave Arts NOVA Light Labs was asked to provide a creative visual display of 3D projection mapping for the August 2016 Capitol Hill Art Walk.

It was thought best to paint the architecture with visuals created by the hands of 3 area artists:

DYLAN NEUWIRTH
LIZ TRAN
FRANK CORREA

For this NOVA Light Labs created a video capture setup enabling the varied style of each artist to be recorded.

The canvas was a 3D printed scale model of the front facade of the 12th Ave Arts Center. With a camera mounted above this canvas all the individual steps and motions of the creative process were captured in full HD video. This was then the video content used for the projection mapping show itself.

The result was as if a larger than life mixed media mural was being created right before your eyes. Neon. Paint. Ferns. More Paint. Awesome!

It was fascinating to see each artist get a grasp of the potential and then apply their signature touch.

On site the effect was achieved via our mobile projection mapping vehicle. By using an automobile as a stationary base urban projections can be realized with ease and flexibility.

With some of the best weather of the season the streets were packed with those enjoying the art walk. Having the entire side of a building lit up as part of the occasion helped bring the art out of the gallery and into the streets while highlighting 12th Ave Arts itself.

GENERATIVE DESIGN PROJECTOR ENCLOSURE

Functional art has a large emphasis in the NOVA Light Labs design process.

Any given system or component needs to function optimally while also looking good.

Generative design is a process which enables the best of both worlds and that is what this piece is all about.

For a recent installation in the lobby of Amazon’s Seattle Headquarters NOVA Light Labs was tasked with creating a projection mapping system that would activate a sculpture of books.

The projector itself was to be visible in the lobby and for that to look the part it needed to be stylish and physically sound. The interface where the enclosure met the ceiling was of utmost importance. A monolithic piece of aluminum would do but it would be too heavy. Enter generative design.

This process allowed for the simulation of the stresses involved and the procedural subtraction of excess material to lighten the load without compromising the integrity. After many rounds the following result was produced which was in turn cut into reality by a CNC router.

It was a beautiful moment when the installation finally came together. We were absolutely thrilled with the result and so was the client and installation team.

POSSI LIFE IMMERSIVE 3D PROJECTION MAPPING STAGE LIGHTING DESIGN

Wall to wall projection mapped visuals and a vibrant stage lighting design came together for many epic parties with POSSI LIFE at the Fred Wildlife Refuge in Seattle, WA.

The space is an amazing canvas for projections, lighting, people, parties, and events of all kinds.

Working at the venue and helping to develop custom looks for their 100% on-brand gatherings was a sight to behold and an excellent time.

Nearly every inch of the huge white backdrop in the room was covered with visuals via an installation of x2 12k lumen laser projectors where content could be mixed on the fly to match the lighting and intensity of each DJ performance.
