FREAKNIGHT MUSIC FESTIVAL 3D PROJECTION MAPPING IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

Gather one gather all for the spectacle of the most wild and themed out Seattle Halloween parties of them all!

NOVA Light Labs was invited to create a 3D projection mapping activation on multiple 4-story buildings outside of the main entrance of the WAMU Theater to provide stimulating eye candy for those awaiting entrance to the 2-night event.

The site required a suite of creative solutions to achieve a vibrant and captivating look for those in queue.

There were streetlights, multiple evenings, lots of people, and tons of seagulls so the installation had to be dialed and resilient to many factors.

To counter this a duo of custom projector enclosures were brought out to protect the assets from inclement weather and beyond!

To achieve a one-of-a-kind look it is necessary to incorporate the unique building architecture into the content creation workflow.

In this instance a 3D model of the building was captured and recreated at a smaller scale. This scale model was then positioned in front of a camera while actual creepy crawlies ranging from caterpillars, to ants, and even a tarantula traversed the landscape.

This footage was then used as the source material for the projection mapping content so that a very convincing look emerged appearing as if the bugs were actually crawling all over the building and through the windows!

MURAL TRACING USING 3D PROJECTION MAPPING

The process of creating larger than life murals can be a creative challenge which is why PNW artist Gretchen Leggitt reached out to NOVA Light Labs for some illuminating help!

By using a projector and mapping software we were able to ensure that the mural to be created was perfectly aligned to the wall and integrated sundial.

By being able to see the mural and double check all of the measurements before proceeding the artist was able to be 100% positive all the shadows and sundial elements were pixel perfect.

After calibrating the projector it was time sit back and watch the magic unfold over the evening as Gretchen and her team used scissor lifts to get 3-stories up and all across the wall marked out for the next phase before sunrise.

41 ROSS GALLERY ALLEYWAY PROJECTION MAPPING

41 Ross Gallery is a premier nexus of art and culture in the historic San Francisco, CA alleyway.

The curators were looking to make a splash for a grand reopening with a video art installation displayed on the walkway in front of the gallery.

To achieve this vision NOVA Light Labs created a custom outdoor rated enclosure for a wide throw projector and computer.

This aluminum enclosure was then painted to match the background and installed just outside of the front door.

On opening night the installation was a success with people of all ages attracted to the light emanating from the alleyway. As many gathered there were other artistic contributions of food, live painting, and acoustic music.

It was a great way for the gallery to activate the space directly outside of its location with an ever changing video of the ocean below.

THE COLLECTIVE SEATTLE GRAND OPENING

The Collective, described as an "urban basecamp for the mind, body, and soul", was an incredible space to work with in the heart of Seattle's South Lake Union.

To properly elevate the visual identity of the grand opening a mix of projection mapping activations were found to be the perfect fit.

Even as the afternoon sun was still setting the high powered projections and lighting were able to set the tone as scores of folks strolled through the opening of the new downtown oasis.

The attractions provided by NOVA Light Labs included the entryway topographic projections, “gobo-style” projections above bars, uplighting, and a stellar collaboration on a mural with regional artist Mimi Kvinge.

Overall the opening was a success for the new establishment. The creative application of light with outdoor themes added a touch that reflected the space itself.
