Choosing a dome surface for projection mapping

Dome projection mapping starts with one structural decision. The surface is either framed, with the geometry visible from inside, or seamless, one unbroken curve.

The geodesic dome, structure in view.

A framed dome carries its membrane outside the structure. From inside, the triangular struts stay part of the picture.

That geometry is not a flaw. Content can be designed to the triangles themselves, and when the visuals lock to the structure the geometry becomes the show.

The struts also give projectors features to map against, so alignment is direct and fast. Framed domes cost less and deploy quickly, which suits live events.

One continuous hemispherical surface without features.

A seamless dome removes the structure from sight. 2 builds get there: an inflatable liner held by negative pressure, or a hard shell finished smooth.

What remains is a single featureless curve. Cinematic content plays exactly as framed, closer to a giant format theater than a mapped structure.

The bar is higher. With no features to map against, alignment requires camera based calibration, and the build takes more engineering, more time, and a higher investment level.
